We asked A.S. Fanning for a list of songs that are, in one way or another, linked to his freshly released album “Second Life” and he sent us a very enjoyable set of songs in return.
Check them out below:
NEU // HALLOGALLO
I was listening to this record a lot while making the album and it had a
strong influence on songs like ‘That’s Where They’ll Find You‘ and
generally on my approach to rhythm, allowing things to get a bit repetitive
and spacey.
WASHINGTON PHILLIPS // DENOMINATION BLUES
This song had a big influence on the recording of ‘Never Been Gone‘.
Whatever instrument he’s playing (I think it’s some kind of autoharp) has
an amazing dreamlike quality which helps to make a song as simple as this
really captivating.
DAVID BOWIE // SUBTERRANEANS
Another album I was listening to a lot at the time, particularlya the 2nd
side of it which features a lot of the ambient synth stuff which definitely
influenced songs like ‘The Heron‘, ‘Empty Suitcase‘ and ‘Second Life‘.
THE VELVET UNDERGROUND // PALE BLUE EYES
One of my favourite Velvet Underground songs but I could have picked a few.
Especially the sweeter, dreamier songs of theirs were an influence on stuff
like ‘Second Life’ and ‘Never Been Gone’.
OTTILIE PATTERON // I WISH I COULD SHIMMY LIKE MY SISTER KATE
I wanted to finish the album with something slightly more lighthearted and
joyful and to me there’s a lot of joy in music like this. I grew up hearing
a lot of this kind of stuff, my Dad had a 10-inch EP of Ottilie Patterson
with the Chris Barber band that he must have bought in the late 50s or
early 60s, I discovered it when I was about 16 and was infatuated with her
voice.
WARREN ZEVON // CARMELITA
